 Sheriff’s Citizen Academy Begins Registration

Why do sworn officers of the law carry firearms, and when are they legally used?  How does a jail function?  Exactly what kind of force may be used to restrain an arrestee on the street and why?  Do officers carry firearms inside jail?  What is immediately happening behind the scenes when one dials “911” of which the caller is probably unaware?  What responsibilities does a sheriff’s office have that a police department may not?  How does our criminal justice system function?

Citizens of Guilford County who are curious about those things now have a place to learn the answers.  The Guilford County Sheriff’s Citizen Academy is an opportunity to understand how law enforcement functions, from every aspect.  A full range of courses is being offered at no cost, in which students learn from experts in specific areas of law enforcement at the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, including Sheriff Barnes, Colonel Powers, Sheriff’s Attorney Matt Mason, and detectives and deputies who work the streets.  A partial listing of subjects includes:

  • Criminal justice
  • Laws of arrest, search and seizure
  • Detention operations and tour
  • Gangs
  • Firearms simulator training
  • Computer crimes
  • Use of force

Space is limited, so enroll now.  Weekly classes begin on August 28, 2014 , and run for 21 weeks.  The 6:30 PM Thursday night sessions will meet at the Sheriff’s Otto Zenke building at 400 W. Washington Street, Greensboro, last approximately three hours each, and will be complemented by lab sessions held on five Saturday mornings.  Interested persons should visit www.guilfordcountysheriff.com for application packet and schedule, or contact the Community Resource Unit at  (336) 641-3378 or (336) 641-5313.
