Suspect in Shooting Investigation Arrested After Fleeing With Handgun

For Immediate Release:  October 7, 2024

The Atlantic City Police Department arrested an August shooting suspect after fleeing from officers with a handgun.

On October 6, 2024, at 6:26 AM, Officer Michael Regalbuto observed Juan Maldonado on a bicycle in the 2500 block of Pacific Avenue.  Maldonado had an active warrant for his arrest stemming from a shooting incident that occurred on August 17 that wounded a man.  The shooting occurred on the 100 block of north Georgia Avenue and the victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury.  Maldonado was identified as the suspect and criminal charges were filed by members of the Violence Crimes Unit.

Upon seeing Officer Regalbuto, Maldonado attempted to flee on his bike.  Officers Moustafa Maarouf, Aidan Richardson, and Glen Robinson assisted Officer Regalbuto in attempting to arrest Maldonado.  After apprehending him, Maldonado actively resisted arrest and was attempting to reach towards his waistband area before the officers were able to get him in custody.  A loaded handgun was found in the area where he was reaching.  Maldonado was also in possession of five bags of heroin.  Officers Maarouf, Richardson, and Robinson all received medical treatment for minor injuries sustained during the arrest.

ARRESTED:  Juan Maldonado, 43, of Pleasantville, NJ.

CHARGES:  Aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon (two counts), possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of a large capacity magazine, possession of a defaced firearm, possession of CDS, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.

Maldonado was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.  These charges are merely an accusation and not proof of guilt.  In all criminal cases, a charged defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
