Fatal Traffic Accident

On 11/26/23 at 12:33PM, the Brooklyn Park Police Department responded to a reported traffic accident on Co Rd 81 near Greenhaven Drive.   911 callers were reporting the accident involved a single vehicle which rolled over in the ditch.   Callers were also reporting there was a male running from the vehicle towards Wal-Mart, 8000 Lakeland Ave.   Brooklyn Park Police and Fire Officers arrived at the vehicle and found it was upside down in the culvert.   There were no other occupants of the vehicle located inside the vehicle.  Additional officers responded to the Wal-Mart where officers located the male who was seen running from the scene.

Due to the severe damage to the vehicle, officers were concerned that there may be parties trapped underneath in the culvert.  Emergency assistance was requested from Citywide Towing.  Citywide Towing responded and winched up the vehicle enough so access could be gained underneath.   Officers located a female victim who appeared to be an adult and was obviously deceased,

While Officers were investigating the incident, they received more information from another 911 caller who reported the vehicle had just fled from the Napa Auto Parts in Osseo, after the occupants had stolen merchandise.   Witnesses reported the vehicle had been driven by a female and there was a male passenger.   The male suspect who officers located at Wal-Mart was determined to have been involved in the theft at Napa and a passenger in the vehicle.   This male suspect was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and later booked at the Hennepin County Jail for multiple outstanding warrants. Additional charges may be filed after further investigation.

This incident involved only one vehicle which was determined to be a vehicle previously reported stolen to the Minneapolis Police Department.   The police were not involved in any sort of pursuit with this vehicle. The police did not learn about the related criminal activity until after the crash had already happened.

The deceased female's identity and cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

The MN State Patrol and Hennepin County Sheriff's Department Crime Scene Investigators assisted with this investigation.  This incident is still under investigation.
