No charges to be filed in early-morning shooting
No
charges will be filed in an early-morning shooting that left one person dead outside
a local nightclub.
Officers
with the Panama City Police Department responded to a shooting at the Gold
Nugget, 3901 W. Highway 98 around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday. Officers found Angel
Alamo-Contreas, H/M, 36, suffering from at least one gunshot. EMS responded and
pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The
shooter, Glen Kippel, W/M, 29, surrendered to arriving officers. Through video evidence
and witness statements, it was determined that Contreras left the bar as it was
closing. After being locked out of the business, and enraged over lost
property, he retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired several rounds into
the front door of the establishment. At that time, the business was still
occupied by multiple patrons and staff.
Upon
hearing the shots, Kippel ran to the front door of the business and witnessed
Contreras still holding the firearm. Kippel fired several shots, striking
Contreras at least once. Kippel was found to be a concealed weapon license
holder and video surveillance confirmed Kippel’s statement of the events.
In
consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, it was determined that Kippel’s
actions were in self-defense and the defense of others. Following interviews
and evidence collection. Kippel was released from custody. The investigation is
ongoing.
