Captain Shawn Sumner Graduates
from Leadership School
Captain Shawn Sumner graduated from the Public
Safety Leadership Academy (PSLA) in Columbus, Ohio on May 28, 2021. The
eleven-week academy was offered at no cost to the police department through a
partnership with the Ohio State University and the Ohio Highway Patrol, who
hosted the training. The 31 graduates
earned ten hours of graduate level academic credit in Senior Leadership through
the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. The specialized curriculum focuses on
managed course content in the areas of Leadership and Ethics; Interpersonal and
Organizational Communication; Public Management; Organizational Culture and
Ethics; Human Resource Management; Budgeting; and Organizational Behavior in
Law Enforcement. This advanced training
is designed to help Ohio law enforcement agencies’ senior leaders address the
challenges of modern policing.
Captain Sumner joined the Beavercreek Police Department in January 1992.
He has served as a patrol officer, detective, patrol supervisor, and
administrative sergeant in the Special Services Division. He was promoted to
captain in July 2020 and currently supervises the Special Services Division.
Captain Sumner has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Leadership
from Urbana University and is a 2013 graduate of Police Executive Leadership
College (PELC).
Sergeant Piasecki Graduates from
STEP
Beavercreek Police Sergeant Brad Piasecki graduated
from Supervisor Training and Education Program (STEP) Class #25 in Dublin, Ohio
on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. Administered
through the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police Law Enforcement Foundation,
STEP is a series of weekly courses attended over a three-month period designed
to help develop critical competencies in the new first line supervisor where
supervisory and management theory is translated into professional practice.
STEP includes twenty-one (21) learning modules that encompass in-class sessions
with interactive discussions as well as out-of-class assignments such as
journals, reports and capstone papers. Students also work on a team project
presentation on a contemporary issue. To date, over 600 first line supervisors
from Ohio’s law enforcement agencies have graduated from the STEP program.
Sergeant Piasecki joined the Beavercreek Police Department in August
2001. He is a graduate of Defiance College with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal
Justice. He has assumed various functions within the police department
including uniform patrol, Technical Crash Investigator, Evidence Technician,
and Officer in Charge (OIC). Sergeant Piasecki became a detective in 2012,
during which time he was the agency’s terrorist liaison officer, a sworn member
of the United States Secret Service task force, a mobile forensic examiner, and
a Homeland Security instructor in terrorist response to bombs. He was
recognized as the Federal “Mobile Examiner of the Year” in 2016 and received an
“Officer of the Year” award from the Miami Valley Crimestoppers in 2017. Sergeant Piasecki currently is a first watch
patrol supervisor.
