Yonkers, NY – Mayor Mike Spano and Police Commissioner John J. Mueller, with the City of Yonkers Department of Civil Service, are proud to announce that the filing period for the September 2021 Police Officer Exam is officially opening this Friday, May 14th. Residents considering a career in law enforcement with the Yonkers Police Department are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The exam is scheduled for Saturday, September 18th, 2021. The filing period closes Wednesday, July 14th, 2021. Exam announcement and applications can be downloaded at www.JoinYPD.com. Members of the Community Affairs Division will be attending events throughout the filing period engaging community members with information and assisting with applications.

The Mayor and Commissioner highlighted the new “Be the Change” program, an education opportunity for police officer candidates with a focus on diversity and community participation. “Be the Change” was designed by our Community Affairs Division to maximize candidate scoring potential for this highly competitive exam: instructors from Police Tutorial Services, a local training company that specializes in Police Officer examinations, is contracted to provide 16-weeks of intensive, hands-on course study with material to students in a hybrid classroom and online environment. This training is being provided FREE of charge to the students, with the City absorbing all costs; and is in addition to the three free training sessions that will also be provided to Yonkers residents prior to the examination date. “Be the Change” reinforces the City’s and Department’s commitment to diversifying the police force to better reflect the community it serves.

“I strongly encourage residents to consider a career as a Yonkers Police Officer”, said Mayor Mike Spano. “This is your opportunity to join the finest Police Department in the world, to make a positive change in the City in which you live and to enjoy the rewarding experience of serving your community.”

Mayor Spano added, “We have made resources available to residents, reinforcing the City’s commitment to creating a Police Department that best reflects the communities they serve. In preparation for the exam, I urge applicants to take full advantage of the free courses available to increase their scoring potential.”

Police Commissioner John J. Mueller stated, “I echo the Mayor’s sentiments. The Yonkers Police Department has invested sizable financial and Departmental resources into putting our Yonkers Police applicants into the absolute best position possible to succeed for the September 2021 entrance exam. The plan Mayor Spano and the YPD have put together for this test cycle is unprecedented and we are very hopeful that this effort will yield the very best Yonkers-grown candidates.”
