Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Crash with Vehicle

For Immediate Release:  April 14, 2021

 

On April 13, 2021 at 9:23 pm, patrol officers responded to the east bound lanes of Route 40 at mile marker 62.4 for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.  Upon the arrival of officers, the female pedestrian, 77, was deceased.  The driver of the vehicle, Michael Ortiz, 56, of Atlantic City, stopped and remained on scene.  He was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division with non-life threatening injuries.

An initial investigation by conducted by Officer Eric Knuttel of the Accident Investigations Section revealed the pedestrian was crossing Route 40 in the left lane.  It is believed that she was going to attempt to climb over the concrete median barrier to cross the roadway when she was struck. 

Next of kin has not been located.  The cause of the crash is under investigation with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
