Detective Bureau Arrest - Armed Robbery Suspect
Since
July of 2019, the Vineland Police Department Detective Bureau has been
investigating multiple armed robberies that occurred at the Riggins Gas Station
located at 4133 S. Main Rd. These robberies involved a black male
approaching the gas attendant, displaying a handgun, and robbing the attendant
of cash. There was the initial incident reported in July of 2019, two incidents
reported in December of 2019, and two incidents reported in January of 2020.
Through the use of surveillance footage and other investigative tools, Det.
Angel Mercano was able to identify a specific vehicle that was linked to these
incidents. During one of the incidents, the accused subject was observed casing
the area by an Off Duty Detective Sergeant however the subject left the area
before additional units could arrive in the area.
On January 13th, 2020, Detective Mercano was conducting
surveillance in the area and noticed the accused vehicle in the area of the
Riggins Gas Station. Det. Mercano stopped the vehicle which was operated by
Fuquan S. Anderson - (36 Year old B/M of the 1700 block of Newcombtown
Rd. in Millville). During the course of the stop, K9 Officer Derrick Magee and
his partner "Fifa" arrived on the scene to assist in the stop. During
the course of the MV stop Det. Mercano smelled the odor of marijuana coming
from inside of the vehicle. A search was conducted of the vehicle at the scene
at which time the officers were able to locate a 9mm handgun that appeared to
have been stuffed under the driver's seat by Anderson when he was
stopped.
Anderson was arrested at the scene for Possession of Marijuana and
Unlawful Possession of a Handgun. During the stop, Det. Mercano noted that
Anderson was wearing distinctive type boots that were observed in surveillance
video from the robberies. A Search Warrant was later obtained for the car and
Anderson's residence and additional evidence was located linking Anderson to
the Riggins robberies.
Anderson was charged with multiple counts of Armed Robbery,
weapons offenses including Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Possession of a
Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, and being a Certain Person not to have a
Weapon. He was processed at the Vineland Police Department and later
transported to the Cumberland County Department of Corrections pending a
Pre-trial Detention Hearing.
The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed
innocent until proven guilty.
