An investigation into the fraudalent use of gift cars and identify theft led to a man and woman being criminally charged.

On October 22, 2019, detectives of the Financial Crumes Unit were alerted by security personnel from Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa about an ongoing fraudulent gift card scheme that involved identity thefts of multiple victims.  

An internal investigation by security identified Daniel Brown and Danita Ancrum as being involved in the scheme.

In July of 2019, Borgata personnel became aware of suspiocus online gift card purchases using various credit card numbers and email addresses.  At that time, they began to void any future purchases and current gift cards that had not yet been used by the suspects. While tracking the suspects, they discovered Brown made hundreds of dollars of purchases at stores and restaurants throughout Borgata and added money to his player account.

In early August, Ancrum was observed demonstrating the same behavior and was accompanied by Brown spending money in the stores as well.

Brown and Ancrum were found to have fraudulently used gift cards to purchase more then $4,000 in goods.  The identities of at least five individuals were used in the purchase and registering of the gift cards.

 
CHARGED:  Daniel Brown, a 29-year-old man from Lindenwold, NJ.

CHARGES:  Theft, theft by deception, receiving stolen property, conspiracy, money laundering, two counts each of identity theft, obtaining value from stolen credit card, and fraudulent use of credit cards.

CHARGED:  Danita Ancrum, a 29-year-old woman from Mount Laurel, NJ.

CHARGES:  Theft, theft by deception, receiving stolen property, conspiracy and money laundering

Brown and Ancrum were issued a summons with a future court date.
