Crime prevention tips - auto theft
We've
had 6 stolen vehicles citywide reported to us since October 1, 2019 that were
due to people leaving their cars running with the keys in the ignition. Please
look at the attached map to see where the incidents have occurred.
As the weather gets colder, we see more people leave their vehicle running unattended
with the keys in the ignition so that they can warm up their car. This can be a
target for theft. Please take these gentle reminders under consideration this
fall and winter season.
- Never
leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you're away from
it, even for "just a minute."
- Always
roll up the windows and lock the car, even if it's in front of your home.
- Never
leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the
trunk or at least out of sight.
- Remove
portable electronic devices such as smart phones.
- Park in
busy, well-lighted area.
- Don't
leave personal identification documents, cash, or credit cards in your
vehicle.
- Remember
if you keep your garage door opener in your vehicle, that could
potentially be used by someone else to access your home or garage
-
As always, if you see something, please say something. Call 911
immediately to report suspicious activity.
