CPD Arrest Two Suspects Following Central Square Shooting Last Week; Seeking Info on Separate Incident Earlier Today
The Cambridge Police Department today
announced that two suspects have been arrested in connection to last Monday
night’s shooting in Central Square. A 15-year-old male resident from Boston and
a 15-year-old male West Roxbury resident were arrested following an investigation
that has been ongoing since Monday night. This is the second significant set of
arrests by the Cambridge Police Department after two separate shootings occurred
in back-to-back days last Sunday morning and Monday evening.
On Monday, May 13 at approximately 5:54
p.m., Cambridge Police Officers patrolling Central Square heard what they
believed to be possible shots fired in the nearby area. Cambridge Emergency
Communications then received calls regarding similar activity. A group of young
males were then reportedly seen fleeing the area. Nearby Cambridge Police
Officers quickly responded to the area. After canvassing the area, Officers
were able to locate and stop one of the males on Green Street. He was taken
into the station for questioning. Officers also recovered two shell casings on Pearl
Street and another on Massachusetts Avenue. Fortunately, there were no
victims.
Prior to the
shooting, two groups of teenage males were seen convening in the area of Pearl
Street and Massachusetts Avenue. All individuals involved were identified by the Cambridge,
Boston and Northeastern Police after the Cambridge Police were able to obtain,
review and circulate surveillance images from area businesses with local law
enforcement partners.
After positively identifying the suspects, arrest
warrants were secured. The two 15-year-old males were taken into custody early
this morning at their residences.
The 15-year-old
Boston resident will face multiple charges, including Armed Assault to Murder, Carrying
a Loaded Firearm Without a License, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a
Building, Possession of a Firearm in Felony, and Possession of Firearm without
an FID Card. The 15-year-old West Roxbury resident charges include Carrying a
Firearm without a License and Accessory after the Fact. They are expected to be
arraigned today at Middlesex County
Juvenile Court.
“I am very pleased that our
officers quickly identified and arrested the young men responsible for this
senseless violence,” said Commissioner Branville G. Bard, Jr. of the Cambridge
Police Department. “This was a brazen act and we were fortunate that nobody was
injured. This type of behavior is not acceptable in our community and, as we
have demonstrated, we won’t rest until we identify and arrest those responsible for these
troubling acts.”
The Cambridge Police Department was
assisted on this investigation by the Boston Police Department U.S.
Marshals, Northeastern Police Department and various Central Square businesses.
The details contained above are allegations. The suspects are
presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable
doubt in a court of law.
