THIRD PRECINCT UPDATE AND BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS

We would like to take a moment and bring everyone up to date on Third Precinct happenings and some back to school safety tips.   The men and women who serve here at the Third Precinct have done an excellent job at helping to keep our residents safe over the summer months.  We had a great National Night Out event in August even though the weather did not cooperate and we had to end our celebration early.   Two of our officers, PO Danny Drago and PO Vionette Martinez, recently attended a Double Dutch jump rope event sponsored by the South Broadway BID.   The officers spontaneously jumped in to have some fun and video from that evening subsequently went viral.   The video was shown both nationally and internationally, the officers were also featured on Fox and Friends in New York City (please see below link).   Thank you to all involved who helped show the community interaction which takes place between the public and our officers on a daily basis.

Tomorrow is the first day of school here in Yonkers for public schools.  This means an increase in both vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout our precinct.  We will have personnel in the area of our schools for both arrivals and dismissals.  Motorists are reminded that it is a violation to pass a stopped school bus which is actively picking up or dropping off students.   The fines for this violation are high and can lead to a license suspension.   Give yourself some extra time, particularly if you have to travel on major roadways including Yonkers Avenue, South Broadway, or Riverdale Avenue.  Students should remember to protect their valuables and keep them covered in public as they travel to and from school.  Jewelry and phones should not be advertised.  Headphones can be a distraction, particularly when crossing a street.  If possible, just wear one ear piece at a time when on the phone or listening to music.

We look forward to the Fall and a continued collaboration with the residents we serve right here in the Third Precinct.

Thank you,

Captain Patrick McCormack
