Man Arrested After Assaulting Officers and Fleeing Car Stop
For Immediate Release:
July 12, 2018
On July 11, 2018, a man was arrested after fighting with
officers during a traffic stop and fleeing in his vehicle.
At 1:18 pm, Officers Christopher Dodson and Alberto Valles
conducted a motor vehicle stop in the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue in
reference to a motor vehicle and equipment violation. As the officers approached, Officer Dodson
requested the driver, Elijah McCoy, lower the heavily tinted windows so the
officers could determine the number of occupants in the car.
McCoy only lowered the window slightly and refused to lower
the window any further. From the now
open window, the officers could smell raw, unburnt marijuana. The officers attempted to conduct an
investigation into the scent, but McCoy refused their orders to exit the
vehicle. After advising McCoy he was
under arrest and to exit the vehicle, he again refused. The officers then attempted to place McCoy in
custody. McCoy first assaulted Officer
Dodson and then Officer Valles. McCoy
put the vehicle in driver and sped off with Officer Valles still attempting to
arrest him. The driver side door slammed
against Officer Valles as McCoy sped away.
The officers returned to their patrol car and attempted to
apprehend McCoy. McCoy eventually stopped
his vehicle at Georgia and Atlantic Avenues where he was taken into
custody. The officers could not locate
the source of the marijuana odor.
ARRESTED: Elijah
McCoy, a 20 year old male from Mays Landing, NJ.
CHARGES: Aggravated
assault by automobile, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer,
resisting arrest, eluding, obstruction of justice, and several motor vehicle
summons.
McCoy was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
