PALESTINE, Texas – On October 29, at approximately 2:20 p.m., the Palestine Police Department was dispatched to 2310 N. Jackson St. in reference to a domestic disturbance. The responding patrol officers arrived on scene and were unable to make contact with anyone at the door. Due to the nature of the call, the officers forced entry into the residence. 

Upon entering, officers found two individuals, Michael Matthews, 41, and Maryl Matthews, 41, both of Palestine, with gunshot wounds. The officers contacted emergency medical services, but both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.  Based on the evidence found at the scene and the ongoing investigation, this incident is being investigated as a murder/suicide. 

Autopsies on both Michael and Maryl Matthews are being conducted Monday.
