Nature: Grants Pass Fire Rescue Improves ISO Rating to a Two

After a recent review of the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety - Fire Rescue Division, city water department and 9-1-1 services, by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), the City of Grants Pass ISO Public Classification rating has improved from a three to a two. The Public Protection Classification (PPC) grading system rates the level of fire protection available. The rating is issued by the insurance industry to establish fire insurance rates for the community. The new rating is scheduled for publication for insurance industry use on September 1, 2015.

The PPC process rates fire departments on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the best and 10 defined as unprotected) using a system that analyzes department data in the areas of communications, department operations, water supply and community risk mitigation. Generally, the lower the rating for the department the lower the insurance premiums are for the community. Of the 47,855 fire departments graded by ISO across the country, only 917 are PPC Class 2.

Grants Pass Fire Rescue requested a review of the PPC after completing significant community supported improvements in fire protection infrastructure. Improvements include the construction of the Redwood and Parkway Public Safety facilities, fire apparatus replacement, staffing additions and improvements to 9-1-1 dispatch services.

City of Grants Pass residential and commercial property owners are encouraged to contact their insurance companies with this information after September 1, 2015 to see if the improved ISO PPC will positively affect their insurance premiums. Insurance companies can vary widely on how they use the ISO PPC ratings to determine insurance premiums.
