On 07/17/2015 at approximately 6:00 pm, units from Grants Pass Fire/Rescue responded to 336 NE Emerald Way for a report of a structure fire.  Units arrived on scene within three minutes and reported a duplex with fire on the exterior of the back side of the structure.  The fire had also extended into the attic.  As crews arrived the occupants reported that everyone was out of the building.

The first arriving fire units attacked the fire from the backside of the structure as the second crew checked for fire in the attic.  Shortly after entering the structure the sheetrock ceiling collapsed onto the firefighters inside and temporarily trapping them.  They quickly extricated themselves from the collapse with the help of the other crews on scene. Both firefighters were unhurt but were taken to Three Rivers Hospital for evaluation as a precaution. The fire was then quickly extinguished.

The resident said that she was cooking on the bar-b-que when she went into the house for a short time.  She heard a popping noise and came out to find the bar-b-que on fire and it spreading to the house.  She called 911 and was able to get her family out of the residence.

Crews from Rural Metro Fire Department, American Medical Response and Grants Pass Police assisted at the fire.

Grants Pass Fire Rescue has dedicated many training hours to handling a firefighter mayday situation.  It is through their skills, training and ability to manage the unexpected that allowed this situation to be handled quickly with minimal injury.

The fire is under investigation. If there are any questions regarding this fire please contact Fire Marshal Brian Pike 541-450-6203. There was no determination on dollar loss at this time.
