Child Safety & ChildID Information
Preventing Lost Children
Summer is fast approaching and with that brings the end to the school year. To help parents prepare, the Borger Police Department is providing the following information and tips to help you prepare and protect your children:
Before You Leave:
Prepare identification for your children. Write down names, DOB, allergies and medical conditions along with a parent’s name and phone number. Put a copy inside your child’s clothing. This will aid other and/or police in contacting you should the child become lost and be found by law enforcement.
This information should also be kept by you along with a recent photograph that you can give to police should your child become lost.
Meeting Place
Before going into places with large amounts of people or where you suspect your child might become lost, show your children important or easy to remember and see landmarks and set a meeting place. This could be as simple as the subway inside a Walmart or even at the bicycles. Make sure they understand and can get there.
Teach your kids to ask for help
Teach your children to ask for help but teach them to be able to identify security officers, lifeguards, employees and police. Teach them not to reach out to men or women that are walking alone and never believe a stranger’s offer to take them to you. They should remain at the set meeting place.
Act Immediately
If your child is lost, act immediately but don’t panic. Stay focused on locating the child. Send someone to the meeting place and have someone, or you, contact police. Check common areas that are over looked; closets and under beds.
ChildID
Did you know that the Borger Police Department has a ChildID Program? This program will provide you with all of the information necessary should your child become lost. It includes fingerprints, a photograph and all of the child’s identifying information. The system then provides a color print out with two detachable wallet sized cards. The information can be kept by you in a safe place and then is easy to provide to police should your child become lost. It is very easy and a great assest for all parents.
In preparation for the summer, the Borger Police Department will have an officer available at the Borger Police Department Monday through Friday from 8 to 5 PM available to complete a ChildID of your children. While you may just stop in and ask for Officer Tosh, parents are encourage to call 273-0930 and schedule an appointment with Officer Tosh to make sure that you don’t have to wait and can get in and out quickly.
The BPD will be offering this service at several upcoming events as well, including the Beach Bash and Summer Celebration so be looking at social media and/or register with Tips4-1-1 for the latest information and locations.
