Campus Safety Message
March 26, 2012
The purpose of this safety message is to provide you with information regarding recent criminal activity in order to assist you in remaining attentive and cautious when it comes to your personal safety. Although Boston University is located in a relatively safe area of the city, there still remains criminal activity consistent with urban life.
On Friday March 23rd a female student reported that she was indecently assaulted on the Esplanade near the Silber Way foot bridge. She described the suspect as an adult black male, standing between 6'0"-6'04" tall, slim and lanky build, with a shaved head with visible stubble. The suspect also had what appeared to be a mole on the right side of his face, by his nose and gaps between all of his teeth. The Massachusetts State Police is handling the investigation.
With springtime upon us and the weather turning warmer, I encourage you to take advantage of it and get out and enjoy all that our community has to offer. I think it’s very important for you to take a moment to remember that although your chances of being the victim of a crime are small, your personal commitment to your own safety is crucial. Therefore, I would like to offer you these few simple safety reminders:
-
I can’t stress enough that you must always remain aware of your surroundings, whether on or off campus;
-
Walk with friends and with others in the area especially at night;
-
If you don’t have anyone to walk with at night, use the University’s escort security service by calling 617.353.4877;
-
Safeguard your valuables by keeping them out of sight; and
-
If you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! Report suspicious persons and activity immediately to the Boston University Police Department by calling 617.353.2121 or by texting anonymously at 847411 Keyword: BU
Together we share the responsibility for maintaining a safe environment. Each one of us can improve our community’s welfare by reporting crime and unsafe conditions, and by helping others. The telephone number to the Boston University Police Department is located on the back of every BU Terrier ID Card. If you have a moment, program that number into your cell phone if you have one.
If you have any questions or concerns about your personal safety here at Boston University and would like to speak to me personally, please e-mail or call me at the Police Department.
Stay Safe!
Chief Thomas G. Robbins
