Location: W. Sherman Ave. and S. Delsea Drive
Case#: 64927-2014
Officer: Dounoulis
Driver #1: Kadijah Govan 20 of Bridgeton NJ
Driver #2: James Tuthill 61 of Pittsgrove NJ
On this date, 11/24/2014 I responded to West Sherman Avenue by the entrance to 2802 South Delsea Drive (Wawa) in regards to a (2) two vehicle crash with no reported injuries.
Upon arrival, I made contact with Driver 1 who related the following information. She said she was stopped by the entrance of the Wawa (Sherman Avenue exit) with the left turn signal on in an attempt to travel westbound on West Sherman Avenue. She stated to her right there was no traffic visible attempting to make a left turn to travel northbound on Delsea Drive, however, there were some vehicles backed up on the straight lane due to the red traffic signal up ahead. She said before she even attempted to make the left turn onto Sherman Avenue, a vehicle on the roadway (west of the entrance) stopped and made a gap to allow her to turn.
Driver 1 said when she saw that the roadway was clear of any traffic traveling either eastbound on westbound on Sherman Avenue, she proceeded to enter the roadway when suddenly she collided with Vehicle 2 traveling eastbound. She said at the last second, she saw Vehicle 2 passing the stopped vehicles on the left (eastbound lane of travel) attempting to get around and get into the left turn lane. As a result of this, the front bumper to her vehicle struck Vehicle 2's passenger side rear quarter panel.
Driver 1 furthermore related that the crash occurred on the westbound lane of travel. No injuries reported by Driver 1 and Vehicle 1 sustained front end damage and was later driven from the scene by Driver 1.
Driver 2 on scene stated he was traveling eastbound on Sherman Avenue already stopped in the left turning lane of Sherman Avenue behind a line of vehicles when suddenly his vehicle was struck on the passenger side rear. Driver 2 added that he at no point pass any vehicles to get into the turning lane when his Vehicle 2 was struck. Driver 2 did not complain of any injuries at the time of the crash and his Vehicle 2 had sustained damage to the passenger side (mid-section near the quarter panel).
Driver 1 provided me with witness information, however, after trying to make several attempts to Cilia Tisdale (856) 245.9775 and (856) 275.9775, I received no answer and the phone lines were disconnected.
Due to the inconsistencies of both driver's statements and the lack of roadway evidence to distinguish where the crash actually occurred, both drivers were issued summonses. It could also be noted during the course of this investigation and with my training and experience of crash reconstructions that Vehicle #1's front bumper was ripped off its hinges which is indicative of Vehicle 2 was in motion and not stopped as indicated by Driver 2.
Driver 1 was issued a summons for improper merging onto a highway and Driver 2 was issued a summons for improper passing. The aforementioned crash is scheduled for court on December 2nd, 2014 at 0900hrs.
Investigation complete.
